Finding Comfort in the Dark Valleys

”Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for You are close beside me. Your rod and Your staff protect and comfort me.” – Psalm 23:4 (NLT)

More Than Just a Shadow

We have all heard David’s prayer in the 23rd Psalm (NLT). Most of us are familiar with the King James version of verse 4: “Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil.” Because of that wording, this verse is often read at funerals-but it’s not just for the end of life.

This is why I like the New Living Translation, which calls these moments “the darkest valleys.” While the overall meaning is the same, “darkest valleys” feels like a better fit for where many of us are living right now. These words aren’t just for death; they represent life’s greatest hardships-the pain that won’t go away, the overwhelming stress of trying to stay in control, and the extreme loneliness of feeling unseen. This verse reminds us that God is always present, even when the valley feels the darkest.

We Have Nothing To Fear

The verse goes on to emphatically state “I will not be afraid.” With this, we are saying that even in the darkest moments, we do not have to be controlled by fear because God is with us. He has promised to never leave or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5)(NKJV). That word “never” is a binding promise from a Father who cannot lie or break the promises He’s made. He is with us on our good days, rejoicing in the fact that we are His. On the days when we struggle, He is with us all the more.

Do you remember the post from January 9th talking discussing. (2 Corinthians 12:9)(NIV)? It says that God’s “strength is made perfect in weakness.” That means when we are walking through the ”darkest valleys” of pain, stress, and worry; His strength is being perfected. He “pours” or “infuses” (January 10th post) that perfect strength into us. We have Him, His promises, His strength, and no need to fear.

The Comfort of the Rod and Staff

In ancient times, the “rod and staff” were tools that shepherds used to guide, protect, and correct the sheep. Today, we can see these as God’s tools of protection, guidance, and correction. The rod pushes away the “wild beasts” of anxiety and the staff gently pulls us back to safety when we wander off because of pain, fear, or worry.

In his prayer, David mentioned that God’s “rod and staff” brought him comfort. They can bring us peace and comfort as well. We have to realize that God’s tools, even when being used to correct, are wielded out of the deep, incomprehensible love that He has for us. He is the Good Shepherd (John 10:14)(NKJV), who rejoices over finding the one sheep who was lost (Luke 15:3-7)(NKJV). This verse encourages us to trust in His guidance and protection, knowing that He walks with us through all of life’s challenges.

Challenge for Today: We don’t have to find the way out of the valley; we just have to stay close to the Shepherd who is already leading us through it. Grab a sticky note, index card, or a piece of paper and write: “The Shepherd is with me”. Put it on your mirror, computer, in a purse/wallet-anywhere you have access to it when the pain feels the loudest. Let it be a reminder that even in the darkest valleys, He hasn’t left your side. Be encouraged to keep putting one foot in front of the other, knowing that “greener pastures” (Psalm 23:2)(NKJV) are coming.
