  • Scripture When Worried:Pit Feels Too Deep-Psalm 40:1-3

    January 18, 2026

“I waited patiently for the Lord; And he inclined to me and heard my cry. He also brought me up out if a horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my steps. He has put a new song in my mouth-Praise to our God; many will see it and fear, and will trust in the Lord.” – Psalm 40:1-3 (NKJV)

    Finding Peace in the Pit

Psalm 40:1-3, written by King David, describes going from deep, aching distress to divine deliverance and a song. It is often the pattern of life for those facing trials.

    Patiently Waiting

    • ”I waited patiently for the Lord”:This shows an attitude of humility and expectancy. It is not a waiting of low energy and indifference. He is expecting, hoping, and looking forward to a response from the Lord.
    • ”He inclined to me and heard me cry”:The word “inclined” shows God leaning in or bending down to listen closely. He made a “physical and spiritual” movement to come nearer. This verse should take away the distant feeling that people have regarding the Creator and us (those suffering).

    The Divine Rescue

    • ”He brought me up out of a horrible pit”: The “horrible pit” and “miry clay” represent situations of total helplessness, desperation, or consequence of sin. These “pits” are the situations we find ourselves in when we just can’t go on. Unfortunately, this is the point that many call on God-as a last resort. That’s sad because He should be our first choice, not last resort. If we had called on Him sooner, we probably wouldn’t be going through it like we are.
    • ”Set my feet upon a Rock”: God always gives us a firm foundation to stand on. This verse emphasizes that God moved us from the mud and mire of not being sure to a position of total security and stability. God is the truest form of security and stability. So I believe this verse is saying, He pulls us out of the pit and places us on Himself-the firm foundation.

    A New Song

    • ”He has put a new song in my mouth”: Being delivered gives us an immediate, new feeling of gratitude. It’s a gratitude that comes from God Himself. Even though the situation doesn’t always immediately disappear, we know and can feel that God has delivered us from it. We know we have the strength to stand up against it. And like everything in this world, it will fade away in due time-God’s time.
    • Many will see and fear, and will trust in the Lord: When deliverance happens, it is a testimony. When other people see God’s faithfulness in others lives, they are often inspired to trust in Him themselves. So, not only are we getting freed from our situation, we are witnessing, about God, to men (Acts 1:8)(NKJV).

When the Pit Feels Too Deep:Finding Your New Song in Psalm 40:1-3

We have all been there-the horrible, miry pit the psalmist describes. Sometimes that pit is external troubles, like financial stress or scares with our health. Other times it is the internal issues, like worry, fear, and the “what-ifs” that keep us up at 3:00 AM.

When we are at the peak of our distress and feel we can’t handle one more thing, our instinct is often to scramble. We, hectically, try to climb out of the pit using our own strength, our own logic, or our own frantic planning. But Psalm 40:1-3 shows us a different plan for our soul.

    The Power of Waiting

This passage starts with a phrase that feel impossible when we’re anxious: “I waited patiently”. In the original Hebrew text this is actually a doubling of the word-it literally means “Waiting, I waited”. That is a very persistent and relentless kind of hope.

God doesn’t expect us to be quiet when we are in the pit. He does, however, expect us to be expectant. We should expect God to move in our situation, especially after we have cried out to Him. The verse goes on to say the Lord inclined to us and heard our cry. As previously stated, this means that God leaned in or bent down to hear what we had to say. He already knew, but He didn’t want to miss a word. Sometimes, we feel like our prayers are hitting a ceiling and going nowhere. Remember, the Creator of the universe is leaning down to hear even our whispers.

    Coming Out of the Mire

The best thing about God’s intervention is that He doesn’t just pull us out of trouble. He makes sure we are stable and on solid ground. He takes us out of the mud and mire-that sinking feeling where nothing is certain and sets us on a Rock.

When we let go of the fear and trust God’s timing, He gives us firm and “established” steps. This is going from a state of total instability to one of permanent security and purpose. This doesn’t mean the world around us will stop shaking; it means underneath our feet-the foundation-is finally solid. Our salvation and our peace have nothing to do with how well we can climb up and everything to do with the One who reached down.

A New Day and A New Song

One of the most beautiful things is that God doesn’t just leave us standing there twiddling our thumbs. He puts a new song in our mouths.

The song that fear sings is old, cold, and repetitive. It says, over and over-“not enough”, “don’t because…”, “you can’t”, and “what if”. Does that song sound familiar? Is it playing in your head right now? It doesn’t have to be that way. God’s song is a hymn of praise. A hymn of victory. I hymn that says, “I am seen”, “I am heard”, “I can”, “I am enough”, and “I am safe”-Praise God.
