    The Shared Yoke

”Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your soul.” – Matthew 11:28-29 (NIV)

I have spent days fighting technical “burdens” – internet issues, SSL certifications, plug-in issues, and one problem after the other. My soul is more tired than my body at this point. And, yes, my mind could use a nap. Jesus’ invitation here isn’t just for a “nap”; it’s an invitation to a partnership.

A yoke, especially in the ancient world, was a wooden beam that connected two oxen so they could pull a heavy load together. Usually, a younger, weaker ox was yoked to an older, stronger one. The stronger ox would carry the majority of the weight and set the pace. The younger, weaker one would simply learn to walk in step.

Have you been trying to pull the “ox cart” of your struggles all by yourself? Are you carrying the load at home? Trying to keep a project on schedule? Or just fighting to keep from breaking down? Jesus is saying, “Stop trying to pull the whole weight alone. Get in the yoke with Me.”

Jesus doesn’t promise an absence of struggle, but a change in how you deal with the struggle. When you are yoked with Him:

He sets the pace: Things aren’t going perfect today, that’s okay. He sets the pace and knows the timing.

He carries the heavy end: He isn’t frustrated by home, work, or personal struggles and errors. He is “gentle and humble,” not a taskmaster who is harsh and severe.

You find soul-rest: Soul-rest is not just “feeling better”. It is an act of restoration by a loving Savior who knows exactly what you need.

Whether it’s at home, work, or something more personal, surrender the weight to the control of the “stronger ox”. Focus on the “gentle” voice of Jesus, take a breath, say a prayer, and look to Him who isn’t worried at all.

Lord, I am so tired from bearing the burden and trying to fix everything myself. I surrender and step into Your yoke today. Thank you for carrying the heavy part of the load. Please give my soul rest while I go through my day, and help me to learn to walk in Your ‘steps’. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Challenge for today: I have had to lean on God so much these past days. I’ll admit, there were times I wanted to give up; I’m sure you all have had your “moments” as well. He’s gotten us through and if we have problems tomorrow, He’ll be there. Grab a sticky note, index card, or piece of paper and write: “He will carry the heavy end.” Put it on your mirror, computer, in your purse/wallet-anywhere you have access to it throughout the day. Let it remind you to yoke yourself to Jesus everyday.
