  • Lamentations 3:Rescue From “The Slip”-4-Steps to God’s Mercy

    January 23, 2026

God rescues us from “The Slip” in Lamentations 3

You drew near on the day I called You, and said, “Do not fear!” O Lord, You have pleaded the case for my soul; You have redeemed my life. – Lamentations 3:57-58 (NKJV)

Great is Thy Faithfulness:Even in “The Slip”:Lamentations 3

Most of us know the famous words that God’s mercies are new every morning and “great is Thy faithfulness” (Lamentations 3:22-23)(NKJV). But Lamentations 3 is so much more than those two statements of truth. Lamentations 3:57-58 (NKJV) is a 4-step rescue plan from “The Slip”

You may not have heard it called “The Slip”. We all know the feeling though. It is that gut-wrenching moment, felt deep inside when our heart drops and we feel like we’re losing our grip on reality. We go from standing on solid ground to a “free fall” that begins the worry. There is a transition from worry to panic (“The Slip”). Worry is the thinking part. “The Slip” is the feeling part. It describes a person who has reached their breaking point.

The beauty of “The Slip” is that it triggers God’s support because, unfortunately, we generally wait until this instant to call out to Him. “The Slip” is the exact, frightening second that anxiety takes over and it precisely when God’s presence “draws near”. His unfailing love actively props us up and puts us back on firm foundation.

“Rescue From “The Slip”:Breakdown of the Verses

Lamentations 3:57-58 is when Jeremiah goes from deep despair to a “powerful testimony” of God’s personal intervention. These verses remind us that even in our lowest, darkest “pit”, God does not stay distant or silent.

Jeremiah writes these words from a place of total despair and hopelessness. These feelings are often compared to the literal pit he was thrown into in Jeremiah 38:6 (NKJV). It describes the worst, darkest time of our lives.

Lamentations 3:57 says “You drew near on the day I called You”. Here, the Hebrew word for “near” (qarav) means an “intimate, inward closeness”. It shows that God is not distant. He closes the gap between His throne and the wreckage that is our life. He does this as soon as He hears us cry out for help.

His command “Do not fear” is the most frequently used command in the Bible. But don’t think it’s a “cliché”. It is, in fact, a “Divine Empowerment”. This means that as God is saying it, He is empowering us (giving us the ability) to follow the command. He is imparting divine courage that settles our racing heart.”

In Lamentations 3:58, Jeremiah states, “O Lord, You have pleaded the case for my soul; You have redeemed my life.” God acts as our “defense attorney” (Advocate). He states our case for the “innocence” of our souls. Stating why our souls shouldn’t be lost or tormented. He always wins. He is also the redeemer who paid the ultimate price-Jesus Christ-to buy our lives back from destruction.

    Devotional-The 4-Step Rescue:God Hears Our Cry

Lamentations 3:57-58 provides a 4-Step Rescue for “The Slip”because “great is Thy faithfulness”.

    The Immediate Response:”You Drew Near”

Lamentations 3:57 shows that God is not a God of distance. He’s not ashamed to be associated with us or the mess we’ve gotten ourselves into. When we are depressed, stressed, or fearful, God feels miles away. But the Bible says the moment we call, “You draw near”. He doesn’t stand at the top of the pit and yell down to us. He doesn’t wait for us to climb out on our own. He comes into the dark, suffocating place of our “slip” to stand right next to us. It’s not about God being everywhere, it’s about Him choosing to be right there. The moment we call out, the space between our problems and God’s presence disappears.

The verse goes on to say “…on the day I called on You”. “On the day” means there is no “waiting period”. This verse promises a real-time spiritual response by the One who handles circumstances immediately. The “Immediate Response” means that God treats our cry for help as His highest priority. He moves from the throne of the universe to the side of our bed or the seat of our car, the second we whisper His name.

The Command to Peace:”Do Not Fear”

Depression, stress, and worry often bring a paralyzing fear of the future. God’s second step is a direct command to our brains:”Do not fear”. This is not a suggestion for us to consider and He isn’t scolding us. It is a gift of peace. Because it is a command from the Creator, it carries with it the power to create, in us, the very peace it requires. Right now, He is taking responsibility for the things that are terrifying us.

The Divine Advocate:”You have pleaded my case”

We, often times, can’t explain why we feel the way we do; let alone defend ourselves.

Scripture says, “O Lord, You have pleaded the case for my soul.” Picture a courtroom. The “what ifs”, “anxiety”, and “failures” are the prosecutors. Anxiety is loud; accusing us of not being enough or trying to get us to believe disaster is coming. But God steps in as our defense attorney (Advocate). He argues, not just for our circumstances, but for our souls.

He steps in when we are too weak and tired to speak; when we have no words left. He protects our minds and hearts from being crushed by the weight of the world. He makes sure that even if the trials of life are difficult, our inner self remains secure and not guilty of the fear assigned to it.

Redemption of Life:”You Have Redeemed My Life”

The final step is the “pull-out” or the “decisive extraction”. In the original Hebrew context, this would be the “physical pulling out from a place of certain death.” The Hebrew word for redeem (ga’al), literally means to “buy something back that was lost or sold into slavery.” Anxiety, fear, depression-these are all forms of mental and spiritual slavery. They dictate every part of our life. This part of the verse reminds us that God has already paid the price to “own” our futures.

“You have”; there is a finality to that. When waves of fear and anxiety hit, this verse acts as an anchor. It tells our heart and mind that regardless of how we feel right now; in reality our lives are already safe. They are bought and paid for by the Almighty.

    Summarizing the 4-Step Rescue

    • Immediate Response: God is right here, right now (v 57a)
    • Command to Peace: Quiets the “noise” with “Do not fear” (v57b)
    • Divine Advocate: He takes over the legal battle for our future (v 58a)
    • Redemption of Life: Our lives are His property, forever secure (v58b)

The complete cycle of healing: God COMES to us, SPEAKS to us, FIGHTS for us, and SECURES us.

    You are Being Redeemed

You may feel like the walls of the pit are too high and the mud is too deep. But you must remember that the God of the universe has already stepped into the dirt with you. You are not an abandoned soul; you are a soul actively being redeemed. Stop looking at how far you have fallen and start looking at the Hand that has already taken hold of yours. The Advocate has won your case, the Warrior has silenced your fear, and the Father has redeemed your life. You are safe, you are held, and you are going to make it through.

Glory to the Advocate Who Redeemed Our Life

All glory belongs to the Lord, who does not distance Himself from our distress but draws near at the moment we cy out. We praise You, Father, for being our Divine Advocate who pleads the case of our souls when we are too weak to speak for ourselves. We give You glory for the NKJV promise that You have already redeemed our lives from the pit. Thank You for silencing the “voice of fear” and for the Perfect Peace that comes from hearing You say,”Do not fear”. May our lives be a living testimony to the rescue that only You Mighty Hand can give.

    AMEN

Heavenly Father, thank You for drawing near to us today. When I feel like I’m slipping into panic and worry, remind me that You are my Advocate. Silence my fears with Your command of peace. I trust that my life is redeemed and secure in Your hands. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.
