”When I saw Him, I fell at His feet as if dead. But He laid His right hand on me and said, ‘Do not be afraid! I am the First and Last.’” – Revelation 1:17 (AMPC)

The Touch of the First and the Last (Alpha and Omega):Revelation 1:17
In Revelation 1, John is so overwhelmed by the “glorified appearance” of Jesus that he falls at His feet “as if dead”. This represents the feeling we have all had of being paralyzed by fear. Revelation 1:17 has become a grounding influence for those who struggle with fear and anxiety. It shows how God responds when we have these paralyzing moments.
John’s collapse wasn’t just physical fatigue. It was the natural human response of being overwhelmed. Overwhelmed by something so much greater than ourselves. All too often, we treat anxiety with the same response and reverence. We become paralyzed, feel powerless, or “dead” to our normal life under the weight of anxiety. Stress, anxiety, and fear should not receive the same emotional reaction reserved for the Son of God.
Jesus doesn’t stand at a distance and shout to us. He reached out and lays “His right hand” on John. He touches him with His right hand-the hand of authority and strength-to calm and reassure.
In Revelation 1:17, Jesus gives John the command “Do not be afraid!” This is a command, not a suggestion that he had the option to do or not. The command is so there is nothing for the mind to consider. Christ didn’t only give John a command, He gave him the “internal peace” to be able to follow the command. This is commonly referred to as “Divine Empowerment”. This is the concept that whenever God give a command, He simultaneously gives them desire and .power to perform the task (Philippians 2:13 AMPC). In simple terms, God doesn’t tell us to do something without giving us the ability to do it.
Jesus tells John the reason he should not be afraid. It is because He is the “First and the Last”. With this statement, Jesus is basically telling John not to be afraid because He is the only constant in a world filled with inconsistencies. Christ is giving him a solid foundation for peace that doesn’t change with the shifting circumstances. He is the “First” (there before our problem started) and the “Last” (there when it’s over). Because He is the “First” and the “Last”, He rules over everything in-between as well.
From Paralyzed to Protected:Why Fear Bows to His Authority in Revelation 1
Anxiety will often paralyze us, making us feel stuck or unable to move forward. Revelation 1:17 shows us that Jesus responds to our paralysis with a gentle, reassuring touch that gives us strength.
Much of our anxiety today comes from the unknown future in a turbulent world. Jesus declared Himself the “First and the Last”. By saying this, He is reminding us, not only does He span all of human history, He covers our personal history. He is already working in our tomorrow.
This verse is followed by Jesus telling us that He holds the “keys of death and the grave” (Revelation 1:18)(NLT). This statement shows that He has authority over the thing humans fear the most-death. If He has the authority over something as big as death, He certainly has authority over the smaller, daily stresses of our life.
Jesus’ command to not be afraid is used to counter all the worrying we do these days. We live in a world of 24/7 noise and perceived threats. This verse invites an awe and trust that replaces the hugely, distracting fear of anxiety in the world.

Devotional:The Hand That Quiets the Soul-Revelation 1
There are times when life doesn’t feel difficult-it feels overwhelming. We look for certainty in an uncertain future, ruminate on our mounting responsibilities, or try to make sense of the chaos in the world. Often, like John, we feel like we’ve fallen “as if dead”. Anxiety and fear have a way of draining the life out of us. They leave us paralyzed and stuck in the “what ifs” of a world we cannot control.
But look at what happens in the middle of John’s collapse. Jesus doesn’t wait for John to pull himself together. He doesn’t lecture him for being afraid. Instead, He responds with a deeply personal “act of grace”: He lays His right hand on Him.
Today, we often try to solve or control our anxiety and fear with more information, self-help books, better planning, or endless scrolling. But the fix-it for a “dead” heart is not more data or more reliance on self; it’s the touch of the Master. The “right hand” in Scripture represents God’s ultimate authority and strength. When that hand is laid upon us, His strength becomes our “stability”.
Jesus gives the reason fear is not necessary: “I am the First and the Last”. This isn’t just a fancy title; it is the “ultimate fear-killer”. The First and the Last means that before our anxiety and fear even began, He was there. And when the situation we’re worried about has finally passed, He will still be there. Think of Christ as a set of bookends. He’s at the beginning and at the end and He holds up everything in-between. Jesus has already walked through our tomorrows and has returned to stand by our side today.
Application:Practicing the Presence of the First and the Last According to Revelation 1
If you feel stuck today, acknowledge the paralysis but stop fighting it for a minute. Admit it, “Lord, I feel overwhelmed and knocked down. I can’t get up on my own”.
Close your eyes and visualize the right hand of Christ resting on your shoulder. Imagine that you can feel a light pressure on that shoulder. Know, in that moment, that His authority and strength are covering your life, your problem, your family, and your future.
Whatever you are facing, remind yourself: He was there at the start, and He will be there at the end. Your current situation is just a book in the middle being held up at each end.
A Call To Walk In His Strength
As you re-enter the noise of your day, do not pull away from the hand that has just steadied you. You don’t have to make your own courage or find the strength to stand on your own. Your only responsibility is to remain under the authority of the One who spans all of time. Walk forward knowing that the “First and the Last” has already cleared the path ahead of you. Turning your moments of paralysis into a steady, guided walk toward peace.
Sticky Note Minute: Use Revelation 1 as a reminder to feel the hand of Christ on you whenever you feel stress threatening to take over. Write:“His right hand is on me”.
Amen
Let us give glory to the Savior who uses His highest authority not to distance Himself, but to reach down and touch the brokenhearted. To the One who was, who is, and who is to come-the First and the Last-be all honor, power, and praise.
Lord, I am overwhelmed. The weight of my worry has brought me to my knees. Right now, I ask for Your right hand to rest on me. Steady my heart and quiet my mind with Your authority. Thank You for being the First and the Last-the One who is there when it ends. I trade my paralysis for Your peace. I know that because You hold the keys to everything, I have nothing to fear. In Jesus’ powerful Name I pray, Amen.
