“Peace I leave with you; My [own] peace I now give and bequeath to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. [Stop allowing yourselves to be fearful and intimidated and cowardly and unsettled.] John 14:27 AMPC

    A Farewell Discourse:Breakdown of John 14:27 AMPC

John 14 tells us about the final hours Jesus spent with the disciples in the Upper Room at the Last Supper. He knew He was leaving them, physically, and that they were afraid. He didn’t give them a routine farewell (“have a nice day” or “I’ll catch ya on the flip-side”); He was legally bequeathing His own personal peace to them. He was preparing them for lied ahead.

”Peace I leave with you”: In this context, the word “leave” doesn’t just mean “walking away”. It’s the language of a Last Will and Testament. Jesus spoke these words in His final hours before the cross. He was a King preparing to die and He was formally declaring what He would leave behind for His “family”.

My [own] peace I now give”: This was no ordinary peace. this is the peace that:

    • Let Him not run in terror or beg for mercy when an angry crowd wanted to throw Him off of a cliff. With intentional peace, He simply walked right through the mob. He was anchored in the Father’s sovereign authority;proving that when you are held by God , the “agitation” of the world has no power over you(Luke 4:28-30 AMPC).
    • While facing a death sentence, Jesus stood in silence before Pilate, refusing to argue His case (Matthew 27:12-14 AMPC). He didn’t have to win that argument because He knew the Highest Court had already decided His destiny. This peace comes from knowing God is the ultimate Judge
    • Even in the chaos of His arrest, Jesus demonstrated a peaceful stability when He healed His enemy’s ear while the world was falling apart (Luke 22:49-51 AMPC).
    • He chose peace over power He could have demonstrated in the Garden when He identified Himself as “I Am”. (John 18:4-6)(AMPC)
    • Jesus proved that His peace wasn’t limited by our worries or walls when He entered a locked room. He came to deliver the very inheritance He had promised(John 20:19-23 AMPC).
    • This is the same “bequeathed” peace that allowed Jesus to sleep on a cushion in a boat during a life-threatening storm. (Mark 4:38 AMPC).

Jesus’ peace is like a giant anchor. It is large and heavy-of divine origin-that sits on the floor of our soul. It’s pointed curves dug deeply in the stability of the bottom. It is solidly held in place. The waves of life may be tossing us around on the surface, but the anchor hasn’t moved. Our soul is safe and stable, regardless of what’s happening on the surface.

A Legal Legacy:What it Means to Bequeath Peace in John 14

“Bequeath to you”: The word “bequeath” changes everything. Generally, it is a legal term used when someone is making out a Will. It means they are giving to someone something that belongs to them. Jesus did this a long time ago with us in mind. He knew the “stuff” of life and the “fog” of depression and anxiety would try to steal our joy. So He signed over His personal peace and stability, to us. We don’t have to ask for or beg for it; don’t have to try and find it. We just have to accept Him, claim the inheritance, and learn to use what we already own. It doesn’t even matter if we feel worthy of it. The AMPC shows us that Christ has legally transferred His own peace and calmness into our names. It is an internal rest and assurance based on our relationship with the Father.

    The World’s Peace:The Rental in John 14

”Not as the world gives do I give to you.” The world “gives” peace like a rental car-it’s yours only as long as you can pay for it with “good circumstances”. In reality, it isn’t “good circumstances” but the absence of conflict that determines if things going right. Our bills being payed, health average or above, our “backlog” being clear, and our relationships being in good working order. That’s a lot to ask for-all the stars aligning and all “the things” be going well. As soon as one of those “things” breaks rank, the world takes it’s peace back, leaving us empty.

The world’s peace, according to John 14:27 AMPC, is a specialized gift from Christ. It is not the fragile silence of the world that shatters when the kids scream or depression and fear invade our minds. Worldly peace comes crashing down when circumstances are no longer perfect-which happens often in our volatile world. Our circumstances and situations change in the blink of an eye; therefore, so does the worldly peace.

The peace of Christ doesn’t depend on life being perfect. Jesus is the only perfect being to ever live, it only stands to reason that His is the only Perfect Peace. He is the perfect anchor, holding us steady while the imperfections of life swirl around us.

Keeping Trouble External:Don’t Let It In

”Do not let your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid”: Trouble is an external reality, but a “troubled heart” is an internal choice. Jesus isn’t saying that the storm and surging waves will vanish; He is telling us to guard the gates of our heart. By refusing to “let” fear in, we are choosing to trust the Internal Anchor more than we trust the waves.

The Call to Action:Your Right to Evict- John 14:27

”[Stop allowing yourselves to be agitated and disturbed; and do not permit yourselves to be fearful and intimidated and and cowardly and unsettled]”: The brackets in the AMPC are not suggestions; they are commands. Jesus isn’t asking us if we “feel” like stopping; He is telling us to. “Stop allowing” the agitation and fear to come in.

If a troubled heart is an internal choice, then we must realize, according to John 14, we have “Landlord Rights” over our own minds. Because Christ has bequeathed His peace to us, we have the legal right to say “NO!” to any negative thought that tries to move in. When fear and anxiety slip past the door, don’t let them take root. You have the legal right to immediately evict those thoughts. Our mind is our property and through Christ’s peace, we get to decide what lives there. We don’t have to allow the agitation; we can choose to keep our minds clear and anchored in our inheritance.

The Internal Anchor:A Devotional for John 14:27 (AMPC)

When the “fog” of depression and anxiety set in or our list of things to do feels like a rising tide, our heart and soul start to feel tossed around. The AMPC gives us a command that feels impossible at first: “Stop allowing yourselves to be agitated….” How can we stop the agitation, fear, and stress when it feels like the waves are too high? We do it by checking our anchor. Christ gave (bequeathed) us His perfect peace that acts as our anchor when life gets to be too much. We have His presence in us. Think about everyone and everything Christ dealt with in His life. He had to have a special kind of calm to maintain His composure when people didn’t believe Him, religious leaders were plotting to kill Him, and He was tempted in the wilderness. He could have “made” people believe or struck down those wanting Him dead. But, He kept His cool and did what He was sent to earth to do. Can you imagine knowing your whole life the pain and suffering you would endure for the very people who didn’t believe? Jesus had the kind of calming peace that He has bequeathed to us. We have the ability to have the same calming peace that Christ had throughout His life.

The Difference Between a Rental and an Inheritance in John 14

The world tries to “rent” us peace. It offers a temporary quiet that only lasts as long as our circumstances are perfect. We all know that “perfect circumstances” are not long-term and change quickly. But Jesus said He bequeaths His peace to us. In legal terms, that means it is our permanent inheritance. The anchor is never removed from our soul. We don’t have to ”feel” peaceful for the anchor to be there; it was dropped into the depths of our soul the moment we became His.

    Dropping Anchor in the Storm

Imagine a ship in a huge storm. The surface is chaotic and the wind is screaming. Deep below the surface, the anchor is lodged in the bottom keeping the boat in one spot. Our anchor hasn’t moved an inch since the minute we accepted Christ as our personal Lord and Savior. Jesus’ peace is that “Internal Anchor”. It isn’t the absence of the storm; it’s the immovable, unshakable connection to the bottom.

Because He has “bequeathed” us His peace, we have the right and ability to look at our racing thoughts and fears and say, “I do not permit you to disturb me! I am anchored!”

    Take Hold of Your Inheritance

You don’t have to beg for peace that has already been legally signed over to you. In the AMPC, we see that Jesus didn’t just offer this gift; He bequeathed it as your permanent legacy. When the waves of the “backlog” or the “fog” of depression and stress try to convince you that you’re drifting, remember that your anchor is already set in the foundation of His promise. You have the authority to evict the agitation. Stop allowing your heart to be troubled. You are not a victim of the storm; you are the beneficiary of the Prince of Peace.

Glory to Him of Perfect Peace

All glory belongs to the Lord Jesus Christ, who did not leave me orphaned, but left me with a legacy of stillness. We praise You, Father, for being the God of all comfort and the Giver of peace that is “not as the world gives”-an unshakable anchor that holds even when our strength fails. We give you thanks for the promise that we can stop the agitation because You are on the throne. May our lives be a testimony to the “perfect peace” that only comes from Your hand.

    AMEN

Lord, thank You for the inheritance of peace that you have legally settled in my name. When my mind begins to race and the agitation tries to take hold, remind me that I am anchored in You. I choose today to stop permitting my heart to be troubled. Thank You for being the anchor that holds me steady through every challenge, every storm, and every season of waiting. In Jesus’ holy Name, Amen.
