  • Romans 8:You Can’t Lose God’s Love There’s Absolute Security

”For I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from (His) love. Death can’t, and life can’t. The angels won’t, and all the powers of hell itself cannot keep God’s love away. Our fears for today, our worries about tomorrow, or where we are-high above the sky, or in the deepest ocean-nothing will ever be able to separate us from the love of God demonstrated by our Lord Jesus Christ when (He) died for us.Romans 8:38-39 (TLB)

    The Living Bible-Romans 8

The Living Bible (TLB) specifically paraphrases Romans 8 verses 38-39 in a way that addresses how many people in the world feel on a daily basis; right now-fearful and worried. With all the worries and fears we have today, one of them should not be losing the love of God.

TLB uses very direct language to show that God’s love is an incredibly strong bond that cannot be broken.

Death and Life can’t: Not the end of everything nor the daily struggles of life-what we do or deal with-has the power to break our connection with Him.

“All the powers of hell itself:” Not only does this include Satan and the demons; but also the darkest, most depressing thoughts or spiritual attacks you find yourself facing. They cannot “keep God’s love away.”

”Our fears for today and our worries about tomorrow:” This language is unique to only a couple versions of the Bible; which is why I chose this one. It specifically mentions that the current panic you are feeling and the dread of the future are not strong enough to separate us from the love of the Father.

”Nothing will ever be able to separate us…:” Paul concludes that no matter how high you go (mania maybe) or to the “deepest ocean” (lowest point you feel), God’s love is already there.

The core meaning of this verse is total, absolute security in God’s love. This passage is often called the “Grand Climax” of Romans 8. The chapter begins with “…no condemnation awaiting those who belong to Christ Jesus.” (Romans 8:1 TLB) and concludes with “no separation”. Even when we feel cut off, emotionally, the fact is that His love remains unchanged. Unchanged because it is based on what Jesus did, not on how we feel.

    No Disturbance Too Great

When depression and fear overcome us, it feels like a heavy, wet blanket inside. A thick black curtain surrounds us-separating us from the rest of the world. It often seems like God is on the other side as well. We feel “separated” due to our lack of energy, our racing thoughts, or inability to find the words to even pray. But The Living Bible gives us a rock solid promise: nothing has the power to keep God’s love from us.

    God’s Love Outruns Our Fear

Paul lists the heaviest things he could think of-death, life, and the powers of hell to start the passage. Then he gets more personal-what some of us struggle with right now. He says that our “fears for today” and our “worries about tomorrow” cannot separate us from His love. Paul makes it clear that whether we are facing the constant pressure of life or the unknown “shadows” of the future; God’s grip on us never slips. This isn’t just a theological list; it’s the promise of ultimate security. No matter how high we climb or how deep we fall, we simply can’t get outside the reach of His loving arms.

Our panic doesn’t push Him away. He doesn’t turn His back on us when we can’t think straight. Our fear doesn’t make Him angry and our anger doesn’t make Him fear. In fact, when we feel like we are sinking in the “deepest ocean”, Romans 8:39 (TLB), reminds us that His love is already down there in the deep with us.

    Safety in God’s Unbreakable Grip

Imagine a father and a small child crossing a busy street. The child (us) holds on to the Father’s finger (God). If we get scared, we tend to release His finger, putting us in danger. When we “let go”, the Father reaches down and wraps His hand around our wrist. Even if we “let go” we aren’t going anywhere. The strength of the connection depends totally on the Father’s grip, not ours.

God’s love isn’t a reward for our “good days” or when our minds are clear. It’s a gift given to us through Jesus Christ. Today, we don’t have to find our way back to Him. We just have to realize that we are never loose from His grip.

    Application to Overcome Fear

Here are a few ways to apply this passage today. Choose the one that works best for you now and keep the others in your pocket for when you might need them.

    Stand Firm in the Grip

Remember this: Your worth is not measured by your productivity, or how well you “do” life. You are a masterpiece of grace, covered by mercy, and secured by a love that is stronger than death, life, the powers of hell, your fears for today, and your worries about tomorrow. You are not just surviving; you have a seat with Christ in the security of God’s love. Breathe deep, because the grip that holds you is unbreakable.

Giving Glory to God, Our Unbreakable Bond

All glory belongs to God, who has reconciled us back to Himself by His Son, Jesus Christ. He doesn’t yell down from His throne or meet us halfway; He comes all the way down, into the deepest, darkest despair-to rescue us. We cannot be separated from His love.

    AMEN

Lord God, thank You that my racing thoughts and worries for tomorrow can never move me out of Your grip. The unbreakable grip that never lets me go. I praise You that nothing-not even my deepest fears or biggest problems- have the power to keep Your love away from me. I rest in the truth that even when I can’t feel you, Your love is the one thing in my life that will never change. There is no “ocean” so deep that Your love can’t reach me. Thank You for the absolute security I have in Christ Jesus, in whose Name I pray, Amen.
